India's First Microprocessor: Shakti
Significantly, in the world of computing and electronic devices, the processor works like the brains of devices. India's movements in the field of science and technology are fast moving forward. The country's leading technical institute, IIT Madras (Chennai) has taken an important step in the direction of electronic hardware and indigenous microprocessors. Actually, IIT Madras has recently made the country's first microprocessor. This processor has been called 'Shakti'.
So far, India was dependent on abroad for such a processor. The team of IIT Kharagpur has prepared this processor in the Semiconductor Lab of Indian Space Research Organization.
This will reduce dependence on India's foreign microprocessor, and the credibility of cybersecurity and defense equipment will also increase. About Processor Kamakoti Vizinathan, Professor of IIT Madras says that at present, many of Digital India's processors need a customized core and the 'power' design of IIT Kharagpur will help in this direction.
In July 2018, 300 chips named RISECREEK was produced under Project Shakti, that was fabricated at the Multinational Chip Manufacturer Intel's facility at Oregon, USA, successfully booted the Linux operating system.
13 companies are already in touch with IITs about the use of this processor. Apart from this, the IIT team is also working towards 'Power Microprocessor' to further enhance its vision. This processor is expected to be ready by December.
